Chapter Twenty-Three

Jeremiah

As I wait outside the plane for the crowd to dissipate, Tony throws his arm over my shoulders. “You ready for this trip?”

“Yeah, I’m ready.” After I got home from following Autumn to her father’s house, I’d crashed. All the exhaustion from the ups and downs of the week finally caught up with me. “Do you want to go to the bar when we get to the hotel?”

“Sure. I’ve got nothing else planned.”

Tony waves at Gunner and Devin as they walk toward us. “Hey, guys. You up for a beer?”

“Absolutely.” Gunner nods. His eyes are covered by blackout sunglasses, and his mouth is set in a firm line.

Tony turns to Devin. “What’s up with him?”

“Woman troubles. What else is there?” Devin drops his bag on the ground at his feet.

“Yeah, what else is there?” After a group of guys disappears inside the aircraft, I move closer to the entrance.

“What’s wrong with you?” Devin asks.

“You don’t want to know.” I glance around to see if anyone’s listening.

Tony leans forward. “Jeremiah has a thing with Coach’s daughter.”

“Damn it.” I glare. “I do not.”

“What the fuck?” Gunner yanks the sunglasses off his face and stares at me. “Which coach?”

“Coach Slater.” Tony elbows Gunner in the ribs.

“No fucking way.” Devin’s eyes bulge.

“He didn’t know who she was and played a game of batter dipping the corndog.”

“Jesus fucking Christ, Tony. Shut up.” Not that I care if the guys know, we’ve been best friends for years, but shit, I don’t want it announced to the entire team.

Gunner jerks his head from side to side like he expects microphones to be dangling down in front of us, recording our conversation. “Does Coach know?”

“Fuck, no.” I shake my head and step to the airplane door threshold. “What do you think, I’m stupid?” I shrug. “Besides, there’s nothing to know. It was a one-time thing, and I’m done with the entire conversation.”

“Jeremiah,” Coach Slater bellows and waves his hand toward himself like he’s beckoning me. “I’ve got to game prep. Can you sit with Autumn and keep her entertained?”

I stop in mid-step as half the team turns to stare at me. Autumn’s seated in the row behind her father with a face that matches her namesake. She closes her eyes and throws her head back against the cushions.

Tony pokes me in the back with his finger. His pointed appendage feels like an icepick wedged into my spine. “Looks like you aren’t as done as you thought.”

“Shut the fuck up,” I grind out between clenched teeth as our teammates who are already on the plane return to their conversation and ignore us.

“Sure.” I cough and clear my throat. How in the hell am I supposed to get over her if people keep throwing us together?

“Thanks, man.” Coach smiles like the cat who ate the canary, shifts his attention back to his tablet and jams earbuds into his ears.

Gunner leans in. “If he only knew.”

“You can shut up, also.”

Gunner raises his hands. “Fine. I’ll butt out. For now.”

“Thanks,” I growl and walk toward Autumn.
